Cable modems to go wireless?

by Sniffer | posted on 03 January 2002

After BT, who is going to be the next broadband supplier to go wireless for home users?

Sniffer

There are (of course) three major broadband Internet providers in the UK. BT has already announced its wireless access point with Linksys for the home; and is in the process of announcing a wireless access deal for business ADSL users, with Intel as its partner.

That leaves NTL and Telewest being cable-only providers.

It can't stay like that;

if they really are "building broadband Britain"; and so it's no surprise that secret data packets have been detected by Sniffer, as they passed from one of those cable giants to a partner in the wireless business. This partner will provide a system for either NTL or BlueYonder cable modem users. But, which?

A deal is said to be "close" in these data exchanges.

Sniffer expects an announcement about tests of new technology from one of these later this month ... and Sniffer's money would be on Telewest's BlueYonder - given that NTL has problems rather more serious than "which wireless access point?" to solve right now.
