Twitter "will not send you messages." Not on a mobile!
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 12 February 2009
The temptation: "Twitter is more fun when used through your mobile phone. Set yours up!" Heck, yes; this is Mobile World Congress! The reality? "No. We won't."
People think Twitter is clever. They also admire the founders for their reluctance to "sell out" and become billionaires. Guys: if you want to make twitter useful, you can't leave out the mobile! - and you can't support the mobile unelss you make some MONEY.
Your message to me reads:
Note: We currently don't support sending SMSes to this number. You may still verify your phone and update Twitter, but we'll never send you a message.
OK, updating from the phone is good! But getting just one half the deal is like giving a legless man a single crutch. It makes him fall over harder, that's all.
There are ways of making money by sending texts. All you have to do is offer me a subscription package, where I define high-priority tweets. Then when the phone beeps, I read the text, and you make ten cents.
Do it!
