"Obsolete" WiFi Zones - India moves to WiMAX
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 12 May 2008
Indian authorites are claiming that WiFi is obsolete, and that they can improve the service by switching to WiMAX.
A report in the local Times of India quotes Jaipur officials as seeing various advantages of moving - but the process will take two years. State principal secretary, IT and Communications, C K Mathew said: "While WiFi allows wireless internet connectivity within a specific enclosure, WiMax is aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways. Currently the state has WiFi zones in six places in the city, with permission granted recently to set up two more such zones.
Jaipur is following the lead Bangalore and Pune in this.
