Two events, two approaches to mobile voice-data: Mobile SIP and IMS Data

"The future of the network: the only way is IP"- a key session at next months Informa conference, in London , on "SIP in the mobile environment." And a month later, the second IMS World Forum in Amsterdam, looking at data from the mobile phone platform. Two key events, both organised by Informa.

The SIP conference is "Examining the business case for the deployment" and is described as "the first commercially facing SIP conference in the mobile arena."

There will be presentations from commercial bodies like LogicaCMG and Sonus Networks and Vodafone R&D, but also from lobby groups like the IPv6 Forum, the SIP Forum, and the GSM association - and, perhaps significantly, the people who count the money! - the Global Billing Association.

The conference runs for three days, 6th-8th September, and the venue is the Novotel in London Euston. That includes a pre-conference Workshop on "SIP as the Catalyst for Fixed Mobile Convergence" on 6th September presented by: Bridgeport Networks, and pre-conference Training sessions on "IP in Modern Networks" on 5-6 September 2005, Presented by Telecoms Academy.

The IMS forum, by contrast, represents the "old guard" or "the dark side, the revenge of the Sith" as VoN pioneer Jeff Pulver put it recently. It's a serious attempt to examine the challenges facing the mobile networks as they pull themselves out of a voice-oriented technology, into Internet environments - and IMS is the Great White Hope for these people.

Topics:

  • The market potential of new IMS applications that will drive up mobile data revenue
  • Transition strategies: from existing infrastructure to IMS based infrastructure
  • Learning from operator’s trials decreasing Capex and increasing revenues
  • Customer ownership issues arising from IMS enabled services
  • Managing different types of QoS in the IMS environment
  • Educating and targeting early IMS adaptors
  • Hosting strategies in the IMS value chain
  • and more, listed in the full agenda on the forum web site.
  • Venue for this one is Amsterdam, the Hilton; dates are the three days from 11th to 13th October. There's also a couple of workshop days; on Monday the 10th and on Friday the 14th.

It seems only fair to warn delegates that the Editor of NewsWireless, a known IMS sceptic, will be moderating a Thursday panel on IMS Billing: differentiating among services and convergence - after lunch.

  • Here's the SIP brochure online (very hard to find!)
  • Full details of the IMS Forum
  • And for those into IMS, the HSDPA forum in September, 6-7 at Jurys, Great Russell St, London, is worth bookmarking.
