Connecting with SmartCards - and Europe - in Sheffield - Event

by Guy Kewney | posted on 03 May 2005

You thought that if the Government had to retreat on ID cards, we'd be safe? Maybe not: All there is to know about smartcards, and how Europe will standardise on them: a two day conference in Sheffield runs Wednesday May 18 to Thursday May 19.

It's open to register for "all local authority staff working with or looking to implement SmartCard solutions."

Led by Sheffield City Council, the two-day conference "has been designed to address the full range of technical and standardisation issues with a focus on interoperability of SmartCards and electronic identification."

The launch will reveal, demonstrate and evaluate the results of seven pilot schemes in six countries including that of Sheffield City Council’s multi-application SmartCard project.

"Ian Watmore will launch the European Centre of Excellence on 19th May 2005.  Having established itself as a European leader in the field of SmartCards and their use in the promotion of social inclusion, Sheffield’s e-Government and ICT unit will manage this UK resource hub for e-Government research, project management, consultancy, accreditation and training. It will also further expand its portfolio of successful EU funded projects and partnership links with other leaders in the field."

No, it's not "irrelevant to what Central Government is planning" as some will think. Ian Watmore is UK head of e-Government.
