Arctic WiMAX triumph! - no, not a niche market at all... no no...
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 04 March 2010
Always on the lookout for Positive News on WiMAX (it's a fourth generation phone system, you know?) NewsWireless was delighted to read: "Airspan WiMAX Selected by Alaska Operator ASTAC" as today's press release.
The threat to LTE seems to be on hold, all the same: "Serving eight traditional native communities and the petroleum industry on the North Slope of Alaska with next-generation services" is the tagline. But it's not a voice solultion: it is a remote Internet product for awkward terrain. Just what WiMAX is best at, in fact.
It says: "Utilizing Airspan’s WiMAX solution, ASTAC provides Alaska’s North Slope communities and
industries with a true broadband experience, enabling homes and businesses to access highspeed
Internet, carrier class Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and nomadic capabilities."
