Porn on your Handset - go and see it!

by Staff Writer | posted on 24 March 2004

The "160 characters" of the standard SMS text might not seem a fruitful way of distributing "questionable content" as it is described; but it is a portal through which adult material can reach phone users. And some of them are too young. A seminar - 31st March - in the evening, will discuss it.

What action are operators taking to prevent 'adult' content getting onto the wrong handsets? What safeguards are being put in place to protect under-eighteens?

"Porn on handsets isn't just about in-your-face adult content, but about access to interactive services. The issue of child protection is a fast moving and complex debate, where the operators must not seek competitive advantage," said Mike Grenville, CEO, 160Characters. "The danger is that despite their good intentions, operators don't effectively address the issues."

The organisation is doing new season of monthly forums, kicking off with this one, on this sensitive subject.

Speakers are John Maynard, Commercial Partnerships, Vodafone UK and Jonny Shipp, Head of Content Control, O2, plus Ruth Dixon, Advisory Services Manager, Child Net

The time: Wednesday 31st March 2004, 18.30 - the venue is The Evangelist, 33 Black Friars Lane, London EC4V 6EP
