Bluetooth - high quality audio from CSR, but still no wind noise filter
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 02 June 2009
I gave up using Bluetooth headsets when it became apparent that the gentlest breeze would make more noise in the microphone than my voice would. Even walkin down the street could cause audio to cut out. So when CSR announced "the fifth generation of its Clear Voice Capture (CVC 5.0) audio enhancement and noise suppression software," I got quite excited.
It turns out that there are lots of good reasons to get latest-generation audio Bluetooth but - sadly - wind noise isn't one of them. We're talkin about background noise, not microphone-generated hiss: What it does, is listen for speech, and focus all its efforts on re-constructing the original audio stream. What it can't do, is listen for speech when all it can hear is microphone hiss.
So it's probably as big an improvement as CSR says, but not going to solve my problem.
Original press release here.
CVC 5.0 is the only solution on the market that provides state of the art audio enhancements and noise suppression to the near and far end; as well as providing packet loss and bit error concealment for an improved user experience when using a Bluetooth headset. Available now, CVC 5.0 features in CSR’s new BlueCore ROM mono headset solution BC6140 and as a software feature in BlueCore5-Multimedia. It will also be available on the forthcoming BC6150 chip.
