Data on mobiles: how to set them up for all UK networks
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 16 July 2008
The "how-to" page at FileSaveAs may not be quite the longest web page in the world... probably! But it's hard to think of any question you might ask about setting up a mobile phone in the UK, to do data, which isn't answered here.
The page is the GPRS page and it starts out with settings for all networks in Britain, and here's just one example:
O2 GPRS settings (WAP):
Note: Different settings for contract and PAYG (Pay as you go)
Homepage: http://wap.o2.co.uk/
APN address (contract): wap.o2.co.uk
APN address (PAYG): payandgo.o2.co.uk
Gateway (IP) address : 193.113.200.195
Username : o2wap (contract) / payandgo (PAYG)
Password: password
Session type: Continuous / permanent
Authentication: Normal
Security: Off
Port number: 9201
Each service contains a link to either the service provider web site, or a page at FileSaveAs, or both.
So the O2 details, above, link to "our unofficial O2 information" and also to the O2 WAP settings page
It's not just the big names, Voda, T-Mobile and so on: settings for Tesco-Mobile and Virgin and BT-Mobile are there, too.
But after that, you're only half way down the page. There's a paragraph of links for setting up Internet on smartphones - something you'd probably imagine "just works" but in reality, needs advice to sort out.
It's a short par:
On the FileSaveAs site, we have a number of pages dedicated to setting up mobile Internet on smartphones and handheld computers. Try one of the following links:it says, and then shows the following list of links to other useful pages:
There follows a useful FAQ, and after that, a link to their "online radio" show.
Recommended.
