Boot from iPod? Vista?

A happy ending to a "dead laptop" saga.
My friend rang in a bit of a panic - a young member of the family had killed the portable PC. It switched off, normally, from the Windows "start" button; and when power came back, it just sat there.
The story could have been long, but the user rang back next day. "I'd left the iPod connected."
Apparently, this particular laptop is set to try to boot from an attached USB device. It was waiting for the iPod to provide Vista...
