It's not often I get the announcement of a new conference the day it starts - and there's always the excitement of planning a trip to some exotic conference destination. Except this is the Gartner wireless and mobile summit, and it's in Detroit. And it really does start today!

The conference is worth a visit, if you can stand Detroit in March - with new product launches and keynote speeches. To quote the official announcement: "The Gartner Wireless & Mobile Summit is loaded with content addressing the most critical issues today including:

  •  Wireless Email
  •  Next Generation Wireless-Wimax
  •  Security of your Network and Devices
  •  Managing the Mobile Environment (policy and standards)
  •  Home Networks
  •  Mobile Devices, Industrial Handhelds and Tablet Computers
  •  Voice over WiFi
  • WiFi is one of the key strands to the Detroit conference with the first keynote given by Frank Hanzlik, Managing Director of the WiFi Alliance. There's a futurology keynote by Dr. James Canton, Chairman and CEO, Institute for Global Futures; two Gartner consultants (Ken Dulaney and Nick Jones) and finally, a special tutorial session looking at home networking by Craig J. Mathias, a principal with Farpoint Group.

<1/>More than 30 companies will be sponsors exhibiting at the conference. A listing of Gartner Wireless & Mobile Summit sponsors is available at www.gartner.com/2_events/conferences/ra9_sponsors.jsp
