Spatial Wireless Selected by Siemens to Deploy a Voice Core solution for 3G UMTS Network in the United States

PLANO, Texas, February 9 /PRNewswire/ --
Spatial Wireless(1) has been selected by Siemens Communications, Inc., to supply a 3G wireless MSC solution to support Siemens’ key customer of 3G UMTS networks in the United States. Spatial Atrium, a next generation wireless distributed mobile switching solution, will enable wireless carriers to realise significant operation and capital expense savings with a common voice core solution simultaneously supporting multiple generations of radio access, services, and core transport technologies.
Spatial Atrium, based on an advanced 3G architecture utilising open industry standard hardware and software components, will enable carriers to economically and rapidly deploy new services.
A distributed mobile switching solution is characterised by a centralised call server, providing the switching logic and management, and one or more media gateways providing the physical bearer (voice) path communicating through open standard interfaces. For example, this architecture will allow carriers like Cingular, which recently announced it would deploy UMTS in major markets across the United States, to centralise operations at the call server sites in regional centres, while distributing media gateways to the various communities where calls are most likely to be connected, thereby reducing maintenance expenses and unnecessary backhaul costs.
"By working with Spatial Wireless, Siemens will deliver a comprehensive, integrated solution that is designed to enable Cingular to achieve network efficiencies and lower operating expenses," said Joerg Lippert, vice president and general manager, Mobile Networks, Siemens Communications, Inc.
"Together with our partner Siemens, we are honoured to be given the opportunity to work diligently to meet Cingular’s goal to be the leading 3G wireless carrier in America." said Pardeep Kohli, Senior Vice President, Alcatel Mobile NGN. "Our relationship with Siemens, in conjunction with their strong portfolio of 3G technologies and services, enables us to provide a market leading solution."
