This page contains two tables that describe the current world of Java-enabled devices. The tables are as follows:

The page is a pretty dense set of figures at first glance, but is worth a closer look. Two remarkable bits of meticulous research stand out:

First is Java enabled devices and then

you might check out wireless technologies. This table is, as Sun's site says, a companion to the first.

The place to start from is probably the home page of Sun's wireless centre, which lists dozens of white papers on - mostly - using Java in wireless devices. But it does it in a way that makes it invaluable for anybody thinking of designing a wireless or mobile appliance.

I'd also suggest that anybody planning to buy a mobile phone or hand-held computer or pager, should read "Wireless Software Design Techniques" as a way of understanding what is good design, and what is bad design. There's little quite as frustrating as getting an expensive item of technology home, only to discover that it won't easily do what you bought it for ...
