Proxim comes to wireless consumers in sheep's clothing ...

Don't get me wrong; Proxim doesn't hide its sponsorship of "The Wireless Lan Resource Site" - and there is some useful stuff there. But ... it's all Proxim, nothing else, frankly.

It was pretty smart of Proxim. The company's a definite market leader and technology innovator in networking and particularly in wireless LANs; and I guess what happened was: one day, someone there noticed that the wirelesslan.com web site wasn't registered to anybody.

It says it's "sponsored by" Proxim. Actually, it's a bit more than just "sponsored by" - it is Proxim.

If you go there, you'll find a "Broadband Tutorial" headline. Click on it and you go straight through to www.proxim.com. It's not a bad bit of writing, and well worth recommending; as is the article on "What is a Wireless LAN?" which goes through equally quickly to Proxim.

Just to make the site look a bit more than a puff-spot for Proxim, you'll discover they've also flagged two PDF files from market research company Frost and Sullivan - looking at the market for wireless. The first is dated 1999, and refers to the US Home Wireless market; - quite readable, but a wee bit dated - and the second is the rather less accessible Frost & Sullivan Comprehensive Wireless LAN Market Survey which is not only out of date, but pretty dense, and pretty hard to find the text in, with nearly half the document being the contents list ...

Frankly, you'd do better to go straight through to Proxim's list of all its white papers which has stuff which is far more wide-ranging and up to date, and isn't any sort of attempt to disguise a sales job as impartial advice.
