There are cheap ways to work cool with a laptop

Common sense, definitely, is the best way to solve the problem of a really hot laptop. But of course, not everybody wants common sense; they want to spend money. Well - let them.
Of course, if you don't have to look high-tech, you can do it with household appliances.

An ordinary heat-resistant table-mat will protect your skin, but it won't complete insulate you. What you want isn't just a table mat. If you want to imitate the Koolsink, you can do that. A piece of non-flat metal - like a biscuit-tin lid, or a baking tray can go on top of the table-mat, and will allow circulation.
Circulation has two purposes. It keeps the base of the computer well away from blockages. Blockages like the fabric of your clothes will clog the fan that feeds cold air to the PC.
But the other purpose of air circulation is to stop the insulating barrier between your leg and the machine from heating up.
