by Guy Kewney | posted on 01 October 2003
Calypso Wireless has announced (October 1st) that it has signed a field trial installation agreement with Enitel, a mobile carrier partially owned and operated by Swedtel, for its hybrid phone technology.
The field trial is of Calypso Wireless' realtime video cellular phone technology that uses WiFi as well as GSM phone networks. It enables wireless customers to connect to the Internet at broadband speeds of up to 11,000 Kbps (11Mbps), enabling movie-quality, real-time video conferencing via Calypso's cellular phones.

In the press release, Calypso said: "The real value of our relationship with Enitel/Swedtel is not just in potential contracts with Swedtel-owned mobile operators, more importantly, it is in the relationships that Swedtel has with a host of operators worldwide."
Swedtel has carried out more than 500 successful telecommunication projects for its clients in more than 100 countries, said Calypso. "We believe that a satisfactory completion of Enitel's field trials, could lead to positive response among Swedtel's other clients as well," says Mark Sujo, Vice President of Sales of Calypso Wireless.
Calypso Wireless claims to have developed technology that offers several benefits over all of the other systems currently in use.
It has a design for both GSM/GPRS and also for CDMA cellular phones which will also use WLAN technology to deliver VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and real time video conferencing, voice and data whenever they are in range of a Wireless Access Point. It boasts the world's only mobile real-time video cellular phone capable of seamlessly switching voice and data back and forth between the cellular networks and the new Wi-Fi networks.
Swedtel is owned by a holding company jointly owned by TeliaSonera and Industri Kapital.
