Richard Moat gets CEO gig at T-Mobile UK

by Staff Writer | posted on 07 May 2009

T-Mobile UK has installed Richard Moat as the new CEO, per TechRadar. He succeeds Jim Hyde who left the firm for "personal reasons" (according to Mobile News) at the end of March. For a slightly more sceptical view, see NewsWireless

He joins as parent company Deutsche Telekom announces a Q1 net loss of Euro 1.1bn, thanks to a write down of Euro 1.8bn at the UK mobile operation. According to Reuters, T-Mobile UK might yet be sold, as DT says there is still room for further consolidation in the UK market. (You can ignore the rumours about a merger with 3 UK, which - secretly - belongs to China Mobile).

There's not much chatter yet about Moat's appointment beyond the press released basics: Moat joins from a previous CEO-ship at Orange Romania. He's also been in charge for Orange in Denmark and Thailand during his 17 years with the firm.

Naturally, T-Mobile is delighted to have him on board and says he'll "further develop the company as a leading-edge, value-adding operator for the benefit of our customers and the T-Mobile Group". Well, it'd be a foollish firm that didn't play up the new boss a little bit, wouldn't it... let's hope he's up for what looks like it'll be an interesting year ahead.
