"The most powerful mobile device on the market" - and its Doom
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 04 August 2008
This might be the sneakiest hype of the week: "The co-founder of id Software is considered one of the creators of the first-person shooter genre, and his technical influence has kept hardware companies rushing to keep up. So it's a bit surprising that he hasn't yet taken advantage of the most powerful mobile device on the market."
The quote is by Chris Morris, and he's talking about games on the iPhone.
The article, in Forbes, looks forward to a resurgent John Carmack's redirection of ID Software, and the arrival of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein games on the iPhone. And it's based on an interview with Carmack, founder of ID (or id, if you prefer) and Anna Kang, president of id (or ID, if you'd rather) so it's worth reading in full.
One has to wonder, however, what Carmack would make of the knowledge that you can, any time you like, watch "Doom" playing, live, in a window, on any mobile phone that can host Picsel? And that you could have done it five years ago? And carried on working on a Microsoft Word document in another window at the same time?
