Another harbour providing Wireless Internet services for visiting boats, is Aberdeen: but it's using a more conventional WiFi mesh service.
The Dick Fleming Communications network uses nine self-linked access points (see map below) on a LocustWorld Mesh, to provide wireless internet access throughout Aberdeen Harbour. The official announcement says the network is accessible to all:
Working closely with the Aberdeen Harbour Board, Dick Fleming Communications have established a wireless mesh across the whole of the harbour, covering an area of around 1 sq km, which extends from the City Centre to the Breakwaters that protect the harbour from the North Sea. Aberdeen Harbour is a busy port seeing over 8,000 vessels every year, many of which are international visitors.
Using 9 Meshboxes, the whole area receives wireless internet service through the mesh. "With increasing reliance on the internet by business and personal users, the wireless internet service is a very attractive bonus for visitors to the harbour," says Locustworld.
The system is available for personal use (transient users can register and be billed) on individual PCs and laptops by sailors, workers and other visitors to the harbour.
