Bang! Your iPod Nano needs to be put out...

Suddenly, portable electronics is lighting up the sky. In Japan, at any rate, cool stuff is suddenly hot. Stand well clear... but it might be good news for Apple, all the same!

Japan's trade and economy ministry, which oversees product problems, "is investigating a possible defect in Apple's iPod after one of the popular digital music players reportedly shot out sparks while recharging," according to Yuti Kageyama, AP business writer.

But the defect is in an old iPod Nano, said the report, which means bad news for people hoping to sell them on eBay, perhaps - but might be good news for Apple, as frightened boppers rush to replace the explosive earlier version.

"The culprit is model MA099J/A, the old black and white plastic model already reported to spew 'chest high flames,' cause bedroom fires, and explode across the floor" said digital evangelist Thomas Ricker
