Hiptop technology disappears into Redmond: sidekick no longer in Danger
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 11 February 2008
Easily the friendliest phone in the world, the Danger Hiptop has been swallowed up by Microsoft, together with all its technology and services experience, announced Windows mobile chief Robbie Bach in Barcelona today.
Bach gave a nod to his launch last night of the Sony-Ericsson Xperia phone, and made the Danger release after that; but the reaction in this crowded hall was audible as the Danger logo came up on screen.
Bach predicted that his division would sell 20 million smartphones this fiscal year - not a trivial number, but certainly a number which reveals just how far Microsoft has to go to become a top five player in the phone business.
The company posted results suggesting that it has overtaken Blackberry in number of devices sold in America.
