Mobile Sony speakers "to fit in your hand" - ideal for your hotel room? Probably not!

It's like that old joke from the early days of mobile phones where a plausible salesman shows up with a phone the size of a thimble, and the gullible mug buys it, only to be asked "Don't you want the batteries, then?" - and shown two huge suitcases.

Sony has released "room-filling sound from speakers that fit in the palm of your hand." You can plug your Walkman phone into them!

And (as the picture shows) they are indeed little and cute! So the blurb goes:

  • 5.1 channel home-theatre-in-a-box system featuring tiny speakers the size of a golf ball
  • "BRAVIA" Theatre Sync technology for one touch operation with "BRAVIA" TVs
  •  Digital Cinema Auto Calibration for fast, simple, automatic multi-channel surround sound setup.
  • Where's the catch? "This sleek and highly affordable system delivers amazing levels of performance, with a total of 550Watts of power to fill even large rooms with breathtaking surround sound. It also sets itself up in approximately 30 seconds and thanks to 'BRAVIA' Theatre Sync, works seamlessly with Sony 'BRAVIA' TVs to give true one-button operation of major functions."

Yes, but how do they get good bass response from that tiny little speaker? "Ah, didn't you want the amplifier and sub-woofer, then?"

Look for the range here come September...
