We Find WeFi finding WiFi hotspots - with maps

by Guy J Kewney | posted on 29 May 2007

Following WiFi "aggregators" like BoingBoing and Fon or Whisher, we will soon have a newcomer, WeFi which but offers a different approach to finding hotspots.

Trying it out is, at the moment, a lottery. The Web site says: "WeFi is currently an invitation-only Beta service. Please enter your email below to recieve [sic] an invitation in the coming weeks," - but it doesn't offer an estimate of how many weeks.

It seems the pioneering Om Malik has had a go at the new service, and he suggests that if you use Windows XP, you might like to download the software. It's better, he says, than Windows Zero Config in finding networks. Also, he likes the WeFi maps which show you where you can find "a lot of free wifi connectivity" and which, he thinks "are somewhat of an advantage for WeFi, compared to Whisher whose downloadable software has made improvements in recent months, and is available for Linux, Mac and Windows computers."

Maps, he likes; but the "friends" feature - "adding a social networking twist to the software... is a bit too much, and frankly, I have some privacy concerns as well."
