3GSM - Telmap demonstrates integrated navigation on Artemis phone

A week after announcing Navigator 3, Telmap got a sample of HTC's forthcoming "Artemis" phone, which includes GPS, to provide a platform for its new software platform - and announced a bundling deal with Nokia for the UK.

The UK deal involves bundling a months' free nav use (worth about ten pounds) and four months free mapping and routing, with non-subsidised E60 and E70 phones.

The software is based on Navteq maps, which Telmap downloads over the air.

Searching and a pedestrian mode are two key sales features. As the company said at the official launch last week:

"Telmap Navigator is the only system that comes with a dedicated, rich-map based Pedestrian guidance and navigation feature, which now offers better usability with GPS/ A-GPS handsets."

The "Free-Text Local Search" was being demonstrated, managing to find the congress with just "Fira" and "Barca" and showing how to get there from here. "Searches such as 'Parking', 'Luigi’s' and 'Sushi' are easily performed - with reliable results guaranteed by the search technology, backed by a growing number of premium rich content sources in the various regions or markets," said the show demonstrator.

This new Local Search features allows searching for places

  • Near current (GPS) position,
  • In another town or near an address, post/zip code etc.
  • On a map, whereas the results appear as clickable icons
  • Around any place from the Address Book, Recent Places
  • Versions were demonstrated with a wide range of phone platforms, and the mapping function works without needing a GPS receiver.

"Version 3.0 is another important milestone on the Telmap route to fulfilling its vision of providing a professional, usable and extensive LBS solution for mobile users", said Ronen Soffer, CTO of Telmap. "In the past year we have developed our roadmap through listening to Telmap’s numerous active, loyal end-users globally, as well as discussing future needs, trends and models with our customers, operators and partners."
