Ubiquisys and Tatara Systems collaborate on IMS-enabled, low-cost, residential 3G access point system
by Staff Writer | posted on 15 September 2006
SWINDON, England and ACTON, MA – 14th September 2006 - UbiquiSys Ltd, the developer of ZoneGate™ mass-market wireless femto access point for the residential market, and Tatara Systems, a leader in carrier-class converged mobile service solutions, today announced the companies are collaborating on a femtocell system that employs the 3GPP IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) standard for mobile core network integration. Through this collaboration, operators will be able to implement a standardized, cost-effective and secure access-network system that supports large-scale femtocell deployments and leverages the existing embedded base of 2G and 3G cell phones.
Femtocells are low-cost cellular access points for mobile operators looking to provide enhanced, in-building 2G or 3G coverage within homes and small businesses. Made possible through recent advances in low-cost 2G/3G silicon, as well as advanced radio frequency planning techniques, femtocells are receiving strong interest from operators globally. However, key to sustainable, mass-market femtocell adoption is a standards-based core-network connectivity solution that supports cost-effective large scale deployments.
This standards-driven approach is central to both Tatara's IMS-based offerings and the UbiquiSys ZoneGate femtocell system. Tatara's Mobile Services Convergence Platform, comprising Tatara Subscriber Gateway and Tatara Service Manager client software, allows service providers to deploy single number access to converged voice and messaging services in today's networks, with a seamless evolution to IMS when appropriate. The IMS-based system offers secure, 3GPP-based service authentication and authorization for homes and small businesses.
"Mobile operators tell us they see IMS as the future of core network evolution and the means by which femtocells will be connected to their networks" said Chris Gilbert, CEO of Ubiquisys. "The more progressive players will launch IMS-based solutions from day one, knowing their customers will benefit from the richer, more integrated service environment the system delivers. This is why Ubiquisys is delighted to be working with Tatara on an IMS-enabled ZoneGate femtocell solution."
Steve Nicolle, president and CEO of Tatara Systems stated, "UbiquiSys solves a key shortcoming in the market place - the ability to economically extend 2G/3G coverage to the home and small businesses. Not only will mobile operators retain customer minutes, they will see an additional clear business need for deploying IMS based solutions. We are pleased to be working with Ubiquisys to provide a complete IMS solution to mobile operators for home-zone coverage."
