news - Founder of Intel buys O2 version of XDA phone - but is foiled by ActiveSync
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 14 July 2006
Recommendations may come with more glamour than Andy Grove, founder of Intel, can muster these days; but surely, O2 won't get many more impressive endorsements than: "The keyboard is by far the best keyboard I have used on a mobile device and it's actually feasible to write short emails on it."?
Yes, Andy has purchased an O2 XGA Exec
It's almost a full-scale review, and it's the latest entry in Andy's blog. He enthuses: "The features that sold me on the product," in order of importance:
It's a relief to know that even Andy finds problems with PCs - "If you decide to buy one of these you definitely need to set aside at least half a day to get it fully setup."
It was ActiveSync that stymied him, he says: "I ran into some issues. It wouldn't work at all on 2 PCs but did work on the 3rd PC I tried. All of the PCs are running Windows XP Pro SP2 and the only difference I can think of is that the two that failed to work have USB2 ports rather than original USB."
Grove found he had to apply an XP patch so that the device is still recognised after a reboot (of either the device or the PC).

(Oh, and don't tell me Andy was not one of the two co-founders of Intel. I know that. But he always tells the story about how he was there at the start... as for you sceptics who think the blog doesn't belong to the REAL Andy Grove all I can say is "how cynical can you kids get?")
Grove? What group does he sing for? - You can discuss this article on our discussion board.
