Myst for Pocket PC misses "game of the year" award
by Staff Writer | posted on 28 November 2005
Mystifyingly, the remarkable achievement of getting MYST onto an iPaq - or even a smartphone - complete with graphics, music and puzzles, failed to win the Fifth Annual Best Software award in the adventure games category of Pocket PC Mag.
The game itself, surely, as one of the most widely played computer games ever, doesn't need
description - but as an excuse for running down the battery on your mobile, it must be right up there.
Playing it on the small screen isn't a problem, says reviewer Marc Morgan: "The controls in Myst are very easy to figure out and to use. If you need to interact with anything on the screen, you simply tap on it, and see what the result is. If you need to turn, you tap on the left or right edges of the screen. If you need to access the menu, you tap on the upper-right corner of the screen during gameplay. If you happen to open a book and you want to flip to the next page, you tap on the right of the book. If you want to go back a page, you need to tap on the left of the book. Once you start playing Myst, you will adjust to the controls almost instantly."
You can, of course, just listen to the music, or "sound art" as it is supposed to be called these days. Or you can buy the game from Handango.
And what was the product of the year, in the opinion of Pocket PC Mag? Erm, well; the forums of that wonderful title, Pocket PC Mag won. "This year we honor the moderators and all those who help other users at our PocketPCmag.com online forums. These individuals volunteer hours of their time to help their fellow Windows Mobile users. Free to everyone, if you have problem or would like some purchasing advice concerning your Pocket PC or Smartphone, post your question. More than likely someone will jump in and help. The forum posts are so useful that last year we expanded this magazine to include a tips section based on these posts."
Disinterested, impartial judging there!
