First signs of consumer WiMAX, as Netgear announces Forum membership
by Staff Writer | posted on 02 September 2005
Netgear has joined the WiMAX Forum "to drive adoption of the merging wireless standard" said the company yesterday.
The move is the first sign of a consumer-targeting wireless company getting interested in the long-range technology which most observers believe will primarily be of value for distributing Internet to awkward buildings.
The controversial bit is the idea of getting mobile WiMAX; it seems Netgear isn't convinced about this yet, either: "As with MIMO and OFDM, WiMAX is another example of how NETGEAR positions itself ahead of the technology curve in developing solutions for emerging wireless standards," said Patrick Lo, chairman and chief executive officer, in the official press release.
Lo went on to describe WiMAX as "a potentially significant technology that could revolutionise the way people get broadband access."
