Nextel launches first ever push email service for Java based phones, using Visto mobile technologies

by Staff Writer | posted on 24 May 2005

Reston, Va. and Redwood Shores, Calif. – May 23, 2005 – Nextel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: NXTL) and Visto Corporation announced the launch of Mobile Email Enhanced, the first email service for Java-enabled mobile phones with full synchronisation and a PDA-like feel. Mobile Email Enhanced pairs ConstantSync™, Visto’s wireless synchronisation technology, with an on-the-phone application to provide real-time access to email, contact lists, and calendars.

Push email allows over-the-air email delivery to the phone without any interaction from the user. Nextel Mobile Email Enhanced works in tandem with Microsoft Outlook®, IBM® Lotus Notes® and most Internet email accounts such as EarthlinkSM and Yahoo! ®.

“With Nextel Mobile Email Enhanced, our customers can make more productive use of their time spent away from their desks or out of the office with easy access to business or personal email,” said Danny Bowman, Nextel vice president of wireless data services. “Mobile Email Enhanced is designed to give our customers the flexibility to customise a solution that best meets both their productivity needs and personal style. This service, powered by Visto, provides many of the benefits of a PDA in the comfortable form of a mobile phone.”

“Nextel has opened up mobile email to a broad market with this new product,” said Brian Bogosian, chairman, president and CEO of Visto Corporation. “Mobile Email Enhanced makes full-featured email available to every customer that wants improved productivity. Visto Mobile and ConstantSync technology enable Nextel to offer a powerful user experience with quick and secure access whether retrieving email from a corporate office or a personal account.”

Nextel Mobile Email Enhanced has been designed to satisfy the needs of IT Managers who require a “behind the firewall solution” and the small business owner for whom simple installation and ease of management are critical. Small business users can quickly download and install the Nextel Desktop Assistant without the need of an IT Department. Larger businesses and enterprises should use the Visto™ Mobile Enterprise Server (VMES) – Nextel is providing the server software at no charge to lower the total cost of ownership.

The service is available on all Java-based Nextel phones, including the recently released Motorola i605, i836, i355 and i275, and will be available for new phones as they launch. Mobile Email Enhanced is available with three productivity bundle options:

•       Premier Data Service Plan ($29.99/month) includes unlimited Mobile Email Enhanced service and unlimited data access, 120 multimedia messages, unlimited text messaging and wireless web browsing;

•       Enhanced Data Services Plan ($19.99/month) includes Mobile Email Enhanced service with 2MB of data access, 120 multimedia messages, unlimited text messaging and wireless web browsing;

•       Mobile Email Enhanced stand-alone service ($14.99/month) with 2MB of data access.
