First txt spam of 3GSM strikes!

by Sniffer | posted on 03 February 2005

The "special offers" for delegates to the 3GSM Congres are pouring in. Amongst the resistible email announcements, we had our first 3GSM spam via SMS: someone offering "your free 3GSM ringtone" - if you can believe that.

Sniffer

The text says tersely: "This is Brojo" - which wasn't encouraging, since I strongly doubt I know anybody with that name. It comes from a +65 country code, and includes a URL which doesn't work on a PC, which was also discouraging.

Link on a smartphone, and you get an offer to "get viral this 3GSM" -

  • Enter competition
  • The Rules
  • Latest Rankings
  • Your Sniffer went for "Rules" and discovered: "Anyone is eligible. We hate competitions that don't allow employees and friends of employees."

It went on that: for each friend you recommend you get five points, and if they recommend someone, another two points. For everyone else in the link, one point. You have to visit the stand to enter, and play the ringtone. And the prize is a crate of fine wine (it says nothing about help with transport).

The perpetrator is Purple Ace. If nothing we've sniffed out so far frightens you, have a look at the illustration...

Fearing nothing, your Sniffer pinched The Boss's mobile while he wasn't looking and logged on, and downloaded the midi tune.

It's dismally awful, but it means, at least, that other delegates in Cannes won't be treated to the appallingly tasteless ringtone he normally uses...
