According to the Gartner Group there will be more hand-held devices connected to the Internet than personal computers by 2003. That makes handheld devices a prevalent technology – not just a gadget looking for a home. Information Builders has pioneered several technologies which support these users in a corporate environment.

The reality
Whilst business users have been the early adopters of hand-held communication services, using remote email access or accessing corporate information systems on the move, the enthusiasm for such devices has been marred by the lack of standardisation across device types, networks and transmission services.
Information Builders has pioneered several technologies using its Business Intelligence solution, WebFOCUS to insulate users from such problems - thus enabling the enterprise to become truly 'mobile'.
It doesn't matter if an organisation chooses Palm, Blackberry or Pocket PC; Information Builders has the technology to build and deliver cohesive mobile business applications.
Mobile technology in practice
The City of Richmond, in the District of Columbia, Canada is using hand held devices to monitor its water and sewage systems. For the 180,000 people in the district, which is an island, the application is critical and is literally 'keeping the island above water'.
Partnering with Avantgo, Information Builders delivered Richmond a 'vision' that enabled every city worker with comprehensive information, about the public works system, accessible via their hand-helds wherever they were – sitting in council chambers during a budget meeting or in a truck responding to a midnight alert in the dead of winter.
The city now has the intelligence it needs to be able to plan effectively for the future and to deal with critical or dangerous problems as they arise. The system uses inexpensive, open standards and can easily be extended to future technologies, made widely available to city staff that can be accessed from a wide variety of inexpensive mobile devices.
