Land area? Wireless waters? WPA your feet?
by Sniffer | posted on 17 November 2004
Just occasionally, our favourite "pay as you go" wireless news site asks us for money for something so strange, we nearly go for it. Today, they told us about "wireless land area networks" and intrigued, your Sniffer tracked this one down to Meta Group.
The original announcement turns out to be the source of the mystery. There's no great excitement really: Meta has discovered that new security (specifically, WPA) has made IT managers more relaxed about installing wireless networks (well, duh!) - and the press release starts out:
"IT organizations have slowly begun to dip their feet into the Wireless Land Area Network (WLAN) waters."
You can, just about, imagine someone who doesn't know what a WLAN is, asking their boss: "What does WLAN stand for?" and on being told "wireless LAN!" then saying: "Oh, wireless land ... OK!" - but why is this person writing an Important Marketing Release about Trends in the IT Industry for a major consulting group?
