Easily the biggest threat to next generation networks, is the public panic about "radiation" from microwave masts; an issue which will be covered next week in a two-day conference in London.

Keynote speaker will be Telstra's Mike Wood, who is an expert in mobile phone base station emissions and measurement.

He will be launching a new version of Telstra-developed software, which measures the emissions that mobile phone base stations give off. "This software is rapidly becoming the global de facto standard for this task and can be used - once trained - by everyone from telecommunications companies through to concerned community groups," said a Telstra spokesman yesterday.

The added benefit of this software is that it can analyse data and present it in clear and simple views in real time. Telstra also gives this software, which has been developed in consultation with the WHO, free of charge to community groups.

The sub-title of the conference is "Essential Information to Minimise Environmental Concerns Surrounding Mobile Networks Infrastructure" and the full agenda is listed on the Web site.

The conference is "Mobile Networks and the Environment" and it takes place in the Mayfair Conference Centre, London, on May 22-23.
