Yes, indeed! Somebody - Digital Sun - has come up with the perfectly serious idea of using a wireless network to control a garden sprinkler system.
Before you get all excited, it's a US-only spec, with the wireless being 916 MHz - not available in GSM phone territories, and if you turn one on, you'll be definitely unpopular.

But the idea is that you can put dozens and dozens of sensors all over the ground, not just where the spray heads are; and they'll tell you when the ground is hot, or dry, and the appropriate sprinkler will turn on.
The image shows a rough block diagram of how it is supposed to be set up. What it doesn't show, of course, is the disgruntled gardener, dodging the sprinkler nozzles as they struggle to pull the sensors up and change the batteries. Dozens and dozens of them, of course ...
