"The Scottish village of Drymen has recently upgraded to Broadband, installing a LocustWorld wireless mesh, delivering high speed internet to homes and businesses throughout the village," reports LocustWorld marketing boss Richard Lander.

Starting in early January 2004, within a month the mesh has grown to 7 nodes, supporting 23 subscribers. "New users are continuing to join the network, growing steadily as local people become more aware of the value that the service offers, and the benefits of an always on broadband internet connection."

The other new mesh is in Columbia Gorge. "The little town of Stevenson, up in the North West of the USA, has a LocustWorld wireless mesh network, providing broadband along the Columbia River waterside, through the centre of town, giving users free internet access," runs Lander's note.

With a population of just over 1,000, Stevenson's local economy is supported by visitors who come for the rugged beauty of the mountains and the recreational opportunities of the Columbia River. "The project was funded by the local authority to encourage tourism and stimulate local business," says Lander.
