Orange: "Mobile? No, this is about movies!"

by Guy J Kewney | posted on 24 November 2008

OK, you'd be sceptical for sure if a mobile operator actually offered to play movies on your handset. So, when Orange, the UK mobile operator, says it's "launching a new 'Orange Film Club' which gives Facebook and Bebo users access to great film content like free preview screenings and exclusive film competitions"?

No, it doesn't mean that it's making Facebook (or Bebo) easier to use on mobile, either.

This new application simply runs on the two social networking sites. "It makes it easy for people to take advantage of the company's ever popular 'Orange Wednesdays' two-for-one promotion."

You sign up for the Facebook "club" and then, if any of your "friends" signs up for a particular promotion, you get notified. So then the two of you can rush off to the preview.

It's a trick, right? It's designed to make you take out an Orange subscription, for sure! Yes?

You might think so. Especially when you read:

To retrieve the 2 for 1 code, Orange customers (Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go mobile) simply text FILM to 241,[1] for home broadband and dial-up customers text ‘FILM’ to 80241. Visit www.orange.co.uk/orangewednesdays for more details.
But no! Here's the helpful hint from Orange itself:
Even if you’re not an Orange customer, you can use the application to ‘Poke’ a friend who is and politely ask them to take you!
So it's just for film buffs... no batteries required.
