Turn your Nokia Series 60 phone into a mobile web server!

by Guy J Kewney | posted on 17 October 2007

Nokia's Mobile Web Server "is a phone application to which you can connect over the Internet with your web browser." It has just been updated to V1.1 and this allows you to  manage and use phone functions with a PC, no external software needed.

Astute and careful observers of Nokia software will immediately realise that at last, this means you don't have to use Nokia PC Suite - the program which, every time they update, everybody says "This time, they've got rid of most of the irritating bugs" - until next time.

The drawback is: it uses your mobile data connection, which costs money. But it does so many cool things! And no, we're not talking about the http://blogs.s60.com/mws/2007/10/having_problems_installing_mob.html bugs - this is a beta version, for goodness sake.

To run Mobile Web Server, you'll need

  • A mymobilesite.net user account. You can register it at this site.
  • Mobile Web Server software for your mobile device. You'll be able to download it later.
  • Internet connection for your mobile device: GPRS, EDGE, 3G or WLAN connection
  • Compatible Nokia mobile device.
  • Oh, and did you pick up your 25%-off Wiley book on Python scripting for Symbian, when you were down at the Excel show? No? Pity; the new web server uses Python.
