"It's not like Real Work, though... is it?"

by Guy Kewney | posted on 28 August 2007

A particularly trying day. You know, you have problems with trying to get Monday's work done at the same time as Tuesday's schedule, but meanwhile the accounts department needs you to chase slow payers (who are even slower at answering email) which means you don't have time to call back the irritating idiots who reckon you are late with payment on some trivial chore or other...? And then one of them, instead of sympathising, says: "Well, it's not like you have a real job, which involves real work, is it? You just take stuff, and write it down."

So I thought I'd share a few of my in-tray time-wasters with you.

All too much?

Just since Friday, when I was told that Outskirts Press Announces the Release of The Journey to Mei, the Latest Highly-Anticipated Book from Author Freddie Remza I've received no fewer than 120 such gripping announcements. From "What's Next After We Virtualized Our Servers? A Kusnetzky Group Paper" through "MyEclipse With "Almost Unprecedented Performance" in JDJ Reader's Choice Awards" and "How Your Phone Line Can Improve Your Bottom Line: Expert Advice From Mike Durante, CEO Select Telecom" to such gems as "Farms Technology Launches 'e-Pit'" (e-Pit executes a simultaneous electronic hedge order and cash grain purchase utilizing the dynamic pricing platform) or "pMDsoft Guarantees PQRI Compliance for Physicians" and "New Free Business Class Logo Making Website Offers Powerful Tools for Professional Quality Logo Production"...

And the irritating thing: it takes me no longer to throw this junk in the bin, than it does to write it up like this.

No, I'm not suicidal. I'm just admiring this cut-throat razor as a potential addition to my lethal appliance collection... maybe I should put out a PR announcement?

What? Oh. You're actually interested in the logo design site? It's at http://www.logoease.com/ ... oh. You were kidding. Ha ha.

I think it is time I got a proper job, yes...
