EDGE data network crashes as AT&T claims iPhone "not to blame"

AT&T may be confident that its "activation problems" around the iPhone are sorted - but users were still complaining about data network failures yesterday.

According to Reuters, "about 2 percent of those who bought iPhones since they went on sale Friday faced delays in activation with AT&T," but "by Monday, those issues were mostly resolved, AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel told the news agency.

But then the data network crashed. According to Technophilez, "iPhone users across the U.S. were complaining Monday that AT&T's wireless data network was down, primarily in the West and Midwest."

The report quoted Warner May at AT&T as saying it was quickly fixed, and that the cause of the problem was "not the iPhone."

May told Technophilez that AT&T had isolated the problem "and was still working on it." Voice and text messaging services remained fully functional but EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) and 3G services were down, he said.

Interestingly, the fault, whatever it was, didn't affect BlackBerry users.
