Largest campus-wide wireless network in Belgium goes live at Brussels University today
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 12 April 2007
The main difference between the university WLAN going live today at Vrije Universiteit in Brussels, and the more conventional college networks that students know elsewhere, is that the Meru Networks deployment works "everywhere" - according to Meru executives announcing the rollout this week.
The company reckons the 5,000 odd users across the campus will be the largest single network community in Belgium.
The network is a mesh. It was designed by Multicap, Meru’s distribution partner in Belgium, providing "reliable application delivery for high density data, toll-quality voice, and streaming video WiFi applications, while its proprietary Wireless Backbone System (WBS) extends these services to outdoor areas and remote locations "through mesh repeating scheme that provides end-to-end QoS and security." Additionally, Meru’s network enables wireless VoIP to all VUB/ULB university staff.
More information at http://www.merunetworks.com and the full text of the official announcement of the contract with the Belgian ministry will eventually appear here.
