Vista: pros, cons, and training needed?
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 14 December 2006
One of the hard parts of "waiting for Vista" next month, is that we don't know how hard it will be when we've finished waiting. Part of the last two months has been spent with betas and RCs and RTMs - and my conclusion is: people are going to find this strange, alien, and hard to relearn. Summary, it isn't Windows.
At the end of the day, this translates to "An awful lot of training needed" - and that's the interim conclusion I came to, while we're waiting, and that's what the Register published today
Which left me wondering: Is Vista worth having?
I found this helpful guide to the pros, and cons, of the new Windows, in the channel publication, Computer Reseller News. I think it's worth putting on the table, when making plans.
Meanwhile, the NewsWireless "labs" are in chaos.
Vista works on a reasonable sized PC, despite everything you may have read. But I was testing it on a Compaq Tablet with half a gigabyte of RAM, and it wasn't quick. So I decided to upgrade.
Investigations continue, but progress is easily summarised. We got the RAM into the machine, and it died. Erm, that's it. Further bulletins as events warrant...
