Something dirty about getting infected...
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 25 September 2006
It is, apparently, OK to go to a clinic with certain infections - but it is NOT all right to talk about them at supper. And now, with the discovery of a PC infection which betrays your habit of visiting porn sites, there's a fear that people will be ashamed to report the latest IE exploit, too.
The initial report from Microsoft confirms that Internet Explorer has a loophole. Sunbelt Software assures us that there's no fix. But the problem is that Eric Sites, in his first report, described this as associated with pornographic web sites.
You don't need to be a brain surgeon (as Alan Sugar was fond of saying about the blindingly obvious) to realise that you can get infected by anyone who is infected - and of course, we already have confirmation of a hosting company - Hostgator - which has had its servers attacked. It was hacked, not accidentally infected - but the result is that anybody accessing one of its sites will get infected.
The sad thing is that the natural human fascination with sex is seen as so humiliating, that people would rather suffer an infection than admit to an activity which suggests they, too, are ordinary human beings with ordinary human interests.
