No mobile? No modem? No internet cafe? Get a pocket Satellite dish!
by Guy J Kewney | posted on 13 September 2006
This news item comes from a sailing boat off a Greek Island. No, the mobile phone network is not involved. The pioneers at NewsWireless will - you'll be relieved to hear - stop at nothing to bring you the latest truly interesting mobile and wireless news, even if it involves having to rest and relax.
So what's the secret?
The answer is that we're pioneering the new Inmarsat BGAN portable satellite receiver/transmitter - mobile broadband anywhere.
The last BGAN dish we tested was the Regional BGAN. It was the size of an astonishingly small device, and looked, frankly, like a pastic lunch box. The new one is Cool! - it really looks electronic, and it really works.
From time to time, when we've generated enough power on board the Oceanis 393 which is called Summer Lightning, we will recharge the batteries of the BGAN and keep you up to date. More about how the technology works next bulletin!
It won't sat the Thames ellite! - geddit?
