EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands----Royal Philips (NYSE:PHG)(AEX:PHI) today announced that Samsung Electronics, one of the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers, has launched the world's first Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) WLAN handset, the SGH-P200, incorporating Philips Nexperia(TM) cellular system solution 6120.

Marking the beginning of an industry trend in fixed-mobile convergence, the Samsung SGH-P200 handset is available to consumers in Italy.

Samsung is taking advantage of the early availability of the Philips Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 for UMA to take the lead in providing consumers with access to GPRS and EDGE mobile services on the same handsets using wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which use unlicensed radio spectrum.

Consumers will be able to roam and switch seamlessly between fixed and mobile services to make inexpensive calls without compromising the service or voice quality. "Consumers are looking to fixed-mobile convergence to reduce phone bills and Samsung has invested huge R&D resources to meet consumer demand," said Kwangsuk Hyun, senior vice president, overseas alliance group, Samsung Electronics. "The Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 from Philips was chosen because of its power efficient design, improved coverage on wireless and cellular networks, enhanced quality of service running multiple applications and ease of use with minimal intervention."

"The individual users who stand to benefit most from fixed-mobile convergence are those who are both consumers and business persons," said John S. Mazur, research director, Gartner and co-author of the report entitled Fixed-Mobile Convergence gives Network Vendors an IMS Opening. "These individuals would embrace a single converged device that removes the present clutter associated with multiple devices, also ensuring their employers improved productivity."

"Samsung's SGH-P200 exemplifies the emerging demand for high-quality, cost effective fixed-mobile services on a converged handset," said Carsten Schimanke, international product marketing manager for connectivity & broadcast, Philips Semiconductors. "Philips Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 is enabling consumers to truly enjoy the benefits of fixed-mobile convergence without compromising on quality."

Philips Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 uses the Philips BGW211, a low-power 802.11g WLAN system-in-package that integrates the baseband/MAC, radio, power amplifier and all necessary front-end components to complete the solution. With receiver sensitivity better than -89dBm and transmit power over 20dBm EIRP, improved RF propagation even within a building premises provides consumers with seamless coverage.

The support of enhanced Wi-Fi features like Unscheduled Power Save Delivery allows UMA talk time of over nine hours.
