San Francisco "didn't ask for very much" for muni WiFi
by Staff Writer | posted on 21 April 2006
They may have awarded San Francisco's wireless Internet contract (to Google and to Earthlink) but that doesn't mean it's all over yet. The fight is on! - trouble is, it isn't altogether clear what the citizens are fighting for.
According to the Register's Andrew Orlowski, half the activists are convinced that the "free" bit of the municipal wireless Internet is too slow, at 300 kilobits. Meanwhile, the other half are saying: "Actually, the free stuff will mostly be used by people who already have Internet, which will widen the digital divide."
One thing they can all agree on, apparently: Earthlink gave the residents of Philadelphia a better deal.
