Nokia phones can now join Pocket PC phones with VoIP - SCN shows at VON
by Guy Kewney | posted on 19 May 2005
At VON Europe next week, you'll be able to see an early version of a software package which allows owners of Nokia Series 60 smartphones to talk free. It's a trick which users if the iMate PDAs already manage, over WiFi; but the SCN software uses Bluetooth - for now, at least.
Quite how the WiFi trick will be pulled off, isn't clear. The Nokia Series 60 is a nice phone, but so far, Nokia hasn't revealed any plans to release a WiFi version. The 6630, mentioned in several SCN reports, is a 3G (wideband CDMA) phone - Bluetooth, yes; no WiFi.
Quite how the Bluetooth trick works, is equally baffling. People don't create Bluetooth "hotspots" - technically, they could, but they don't.
"Truphone allows you to carry only one phone for both fixed and mobile use – seamlessly roaming between WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G - connecting via SIP to the public phone system," says SCN today.
The beta of Truphone is now available for Series 60 smartphones from the company by request to info@scn.com
Meanwhile, over at Engadget, Peter Rojas has pointed out that there are dozens of such devices, all more or less useless. Got that right...
If you're in Stockholm next week, SCN will demo the software on booth 841.
