WiMAX goes live - in a museum in the UK

Normally, when people say they are showcasing a technology in the Science museum, it's of historic interest... or - rarely - of future interest. This WiMAX project seems to be a bit different.

This is real-life trials - Intel will be showcasing "real world demonstrations" of WiMAX in three different usage models.

What this means is that the WiMAX isn't an exhibit. The application is at the Wroughton storage site - housing eighteen thousand of the Museum's items - out in Wiltshire, near Marlborough.

Two trials are based on Alvarion’s BreezeMAX - one in a business environment with a demo from The Science Museum and one in the digital home which is being demonstrated at Dolby Laboratories European HQ.

A rural location demonstration will also take place with an example from Brighton based WiFi service provider MetraNet.

The official announcement reckons the Museum was able to avoid installing a million pounds worth of fibre across the large Wroughton site, housed in a number of old aircraft hangars.
