Tablet: Sir can afford it, after all, says NEC
by Guy Kewney | posted on 15 January 2003
The Versa Tablet PC which our reviewers admired so much yesterday has now got a price, and it is around £ 1,400.
At $2,000 we said originally, it would be a good buy. It's not necessarily a best Value For Money buy, because the (slightly) thicker HP Compaq Tablet comes with a built-in (detachable) keyboard, and a very similar (slightly lower) price tag (around $1,700 in the US, typically).
Apart from the fact that the Compaq a full-featured notebook, and the Versa is just a slate, the main difference between the two, seems to be the fact that the Versa features a Mobile Pentium III, while the Compaq features the lower-power Crusoe chip. Both are rated at 1 GHz, but the Compaq should give rather better battery life.
And of course, the Versa isn't available yet, but the Compaq-branded TC1000 is actually shipping in the UK. Nonetheless, the Versa will definitely turn heads.
We hope to do a side-by-side test of the two shortly.
