Impossible to believe that Nokia and Texas Instruments didn't release this announcement to steal back some of the thunder from Intel's launch of a Windows-based reference phone: they will "cooperate on expanding the Smart Phone market" they say. |
Hitting back against Intel's scornful comparison of the old SPV and the new Wiston-based reference design Nokia said today that it has extended the relationship with Texas Instruments, through an agreement on Nokia's Series 60 Platform and Texas Instrument's industry-leading OMAP application processors.
The main victim of the agreement will be Microsoft, unless it can come up with a similar rabbit from its own hat.
As per the agreement, Texas Instruments intends to optimize the execution of the Series 60 platform on TI's OMAP processors and platform.
This won't prevent TI from offering a similar helping hand to Microsoft, of course, but the combination of Intel and Nokia's announcements will be to focus attention on the possibility that Windows Powered plays its part in the slowness of the Orange SPV.
"Significant optimization work has already been completed and the resulting prototype will be demonstrated for the first time this week during the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France. The demonstration features TI's Innovator(TM) Development Kit for the Series 60 Platform, which includes a color screen, a keypad and all other components required by Series 60 based smart phones," said a Nokia joint announcement with TI.
In a related announcement, Nokia launched the Series 60 Product Creation Community designed to accelerate the development and acceptance of standards-based smart phones. Through the agreement TI becomes the first semiconductor member of the community.
