Phone-readable Tube map offered by London Underground
by Guy Kewney | posted on 13 March 2003
>Anybody with a Java-enabled phone who's lost on the Underground, can now look up the classic Tube map on the train. That is, of course, provided you downloaded it before you went below the surface of the earth - there is still no Internet on the Underground.

There's more - more problems, that is. "Please note that this map is ONLY for some Java-enabled mobile phones, although it may work on some PDAs. We are extending the range of mobile devices on which it works, but it is currently optimised only for the Nokia 7650 and 3650."
And finally, it's only free for the time being, and not for frequent tunnellers. "This is a trial version which will expire after being opened 25 times," says the Underground. A paid-for full release is planned for later this year.
So there you have it; you can get the map free in any station, but if you want to access it on a mobile device, you have to be above ground to download it; and prepared to pay.
Isn't it time we got the proper Internet on the underground?
